Botulinum Toxin (Botox): A Modern Tool with a Fascinating Medical History

At Rooted Health Collective, we approach aesthetics the same way we approach the rest of medicine: thoughtfully, conservatively, and with a focus on long-term wellness. One of the most well-known treatments in aesthetic medicine today is botulinum toxin, commonly known by the brand name Botox. While many people associate it primarily with wrinkle reduction, its history and medical uses extend far beyond cosmetic care.
Botulinum toxin actually has a surprisingly long and interesting medical story. The toxin itself was first identified in the late 1800s by Belgian microbiologist Emile van Ermengem, who studied outbreaks of foodborne botulism. For decades it was primarily understood as a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It was not until the mid-20th century that researchers began exploring whether extremely small, purified doses could be used safely in medicine.
In the 1970s and 1980s, ophthalmologist Dr. Alan Scott began using botulinum toxin to treat patients with strabismus (crossed eyes) by temporarily relaxing overactive eye muscles. These early studies demonstrated that the toxin could be used safely in highly controlled doses to selectively relax muscles. The treatment was eventually approved by the FDA in 1989 for certain eye disorders and muscle spasms.
Interestingly, the cosmetic benefits were discovered somewhat accidentally. Physicians treating patients with facial muscle disorders began noticing that the treated areas appeared smoother and more relaxed. This observation led to further research, and in 2002 the FDA approved Botox for cosmetic use to treat moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Since then, botulinum toxin has become one of the most studied and widely used treatments in aesthetic medicine.
Today, botulinum toxin has a wide range of both medical and aesthetic applications. Medically, it is used for conditions such as:
• Chronic migraine
• Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
• Jaw tension and teeth grinding (TMJ)
• Muscle spasticity
• Cervical dystonia
• Certain eye movement disorders
In aesthetic medicine, Botox works by temporarily relaxing targeted facial muscles. Many facial lines develop from repeated muscle movement over time, often called dynamic wrinkles. These include areas such as:
• Forehead lines
• Frown lines between the brows (“11s”)
• Crow’s feet around the eyes
• Chin dimpling
• Neck bands
By gently reducing muscle activity in these areas, Botox can soften existing lines and help prevent deeper wrinkles from forming over time.
At Rooted Health Collective, our philosophy is never to create a frozen or overdone appearance. Instead, we focus on subtle, natural-looking results that help patients appear refreshed and well-rested while maintaining the expressions that make their face unique.
As we begin expanding into aesthetic services, a colleague and I will be offering introductory Botox treatments at nearly the cost we pay per unit. This allows us to continue refining our technique and building our aesthetic practice while making treatments accessible for patients who may be curious about trying Botox for the first time.
In the coming months, we also plan to expand into additional skin and aesthetic services including chemical peels, microneedling, prescription skincare such as topical retinoids, and comprehensive skin health consultations. Our goal is to provide medical-grade aesthetic care that complements Rooted’s broader focus on long-term wellness and skin health.
To help us plan upcoming treatment days and Rooted Tox Party events, we are currently gathering interest from patients who may want to participate.
If you are interested in learning more or would like to be notified when our first treatment dates are scheduled, please complete the Rooted Aesthetics Botox Consultation & Interest Form below. Once submitted, we will follow up with consultation information and upcoming event dates.
We look forward to helping you feel confident in your skin while keeping results natural, balanced, and rooted in good medicine.
